Balancing Brand Identity with Creativity

This hybrid session had 3 distinguished interior designers present their view of the topic first and then take the stage together to address the audience questions. First was Pooja Shah-Mulani, Partner & Design Director – LW Design. Her presentation explored the challenge of balancing brand identity with creativity by emphasizing the need for global brands to evolve while maintaining consistency, creativity, and curation (the “3 C’s”). She said, brands must stay recognizable and trustworthy yet offer unique, personalized experiences to remain relevant. Using the example of a Ritz Carlton Safari Lodge in Kenya, she illustrated how integrating local craftsmanship, regional storytelling, indigenous materials, and impactful artwork can create authentic, memorable experiences. Her key points were: evolving without losing core identity, embracing structured flexibility to adapt to guest needs, and leveraging culturally rooted storytelling to connect with local communities, ultimately driving global success through meaningful, localized brand experiences.

He also covered the significance of guest experience, storytelling, and how design elements, like oversized lighting and local craftsmanship, help to create a memorable atmosphere. Additionally, Rakan mentioned the role of collaboration with hotel operators and stakeholders, the need for flexibility in adhering to brand guidelines, and the future of hospitality, including AI-driven personalization and regenerative design. The core message was that designers should creatively reinterpret brand guidelines to create authentic, immersive, and enhanced guest experiences.
Maud Capet, Associate Principal – OBMI then presented her take on the subject. She highlighted the importance of hotel branding and design, emphasizing on how consistency in brand guidelines creates familiarity and trust with guests, leading to loyalty. She believes, hotels should reflect their unique location through physical, historical, and social elements while maintaining authenticity, using local materials and craftsmanship. The guest experience is key, with personalized service, attention to guest demographics, and a seamless journey from arrival to departure. Sustainability is crucial, incorporating eco-friendly practices, energy-efficient materials, and natural elements for wellness. She concluded by saying: the design should tell a cohesive story across all hotel spaces, creating a memorable, culturally respectful experience.
